Mention Ella to someone who has seen Sri Lanka on Instagram, and chances are the Nine Arch Bridge will be the first thing they think of.

And yes, it is worth seeing.

But Ella is much more than a beautiful railway bridge.

Tucked among green mountains and tea-covered hills, Ella is one of those places where you can slow down, enjoy the scenery and spend a few days without feeling the need to rush from one attraction to another.

Here are a few reasons to look beyond the famous bridge.

Start With Little Adam's Peak

For one of the easiest ways to see Ella's landscape, head to Little Adam's Peak.

The hike is relatively short, but the views from the top are impressive. Green mountains stretch into the distance, with valleys, tea plantations and winding roads below.

Go early in the morning if you can. The cooler air and softer light make the walk much more enjoyable.

Take a Walk Through Tea Country

Ella is surrounded by tea country, and you don't have to visit a large attraction to appreciate it.

Take a walk through the plantations and watch the landscape change as the road climbs through the hills.

You may see tea being picked, meet local workers or simply find a quiet viewpoint with nothing but mountains around you.

Sometimes, these simple moments are more memorable than the busy tourist spots.

Look Beyond the Town

Ella town can get busy, especially during peak travel periods.

But drive or walk a little further and the atmosphere changes quickly.

Quiet roads, small villages, forests and tea estates surround the town.

This is where Ella really shows its character.

Don't be afraid to spend part of your day without a strict plan. Pick a road, stop for a cup of tea and enjoy the view.

Discover a Waterfall

Ella's surrounding hills are home to several beautiful waterfalls.

Ravana Falls is the most well known and is easy to reach from the main road.

It can get busy, but it's still worth a stop, especially when there is plenty of water flowing.

Ride the Train, But Don't Just Take the Photo

The famous train journey through Sri Lanka's hill country is an experience in itself.

The section around Ella takes you through tea plantations, forests, mountain valleys and small railway stations.

Instead of spending the whole journey trying to get the perfect photograph, put your phone away for a while.

Look outside.

This is one of those journeys where the view keeps changing every few minutes.

Stay a Little Longer

One of the easiest ways to experience a different side of Ella is simply to stay for another night.

Use one morning for a hike, another afternoon for tea country and leave some time to sit somewhere with a view.

You don't have to see everything.

Ella is best enjoyed when you give yourself enough time to slow down.

Ella Is More Than a Photograph

The Nine Arch Bridge may be what brings you to Ella, but it doesn't have to be what you remember most.

It might be the mountain view from Little Adam's Peak, a quiet walk through a tea estate, a roadside cup of tea or simply waking up to mist-covered hills.

That's the beauty of Ella.

Come for the famous places, but give yourself enough time to discover what lies beyond them.
